4 Tricks in Excel for Business

Trick 3 - Introduction to Excel VBA (Visual Basic for Applications)

You are about to embark on a journey to really controlling what a computer can do.

Hidden inside Microsoft Excel is a programming language called VBA (Visual Basic for Applications).

I'll assume you're an Excel user and have been using Excel for at least a year.

Learning something like VBA is like learning to swim. You can't learn it from a book. You need to write VBA programs to be successful.

I've made a number of assumptions to your skills. But if you're not good at Excel, then learning VBA should be secondary to learning to use Excel. You should know about the following:

Home Ribbon
  • Clipboard
  • Font
  • Alignment
  • Number
  • Conditional Formatting
  • Cells
  • Editing
  • Pivot Tables
  • Charts
  • Links
Page Layout
  • Page Setup
  • Insert Function
  • Function Library
  • Defined Names
  • Evaluate Formula
  • Calculation
  • Get External Data
  • Sort and Filter
  • Text to columns
  • Remove Duplicates
  • Data Validation
  • Outline
  • Comments
  • Protect/Unprotect Sheet
  • Protect/Unprotect Workbook
  • Share Workbook
  • New Window
  • Freeze Panes
  • Hide/unhide
  • Switch Windows
If you're already a programmer you should get my book Excel/VBA for Programmers, which is this book without teaching you how to program.
